How a Specialist Can Help

After you meet with your regular doctor, he or she may recommend that you see a specialist like a urogynecologist (U-ro-GUY-ne-KOL
-o-jist) or urologist (u-RAH-lo-jist). These are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating urinary problems, so they see many patients with bladder control problems.

A urology specialist may do some other kinds of tests to help diagnose your bladder problem. Imaging, like an x-ray or ultrasound, can help your doctor see how your urinary system is shaped. Or your doctor may use one or more procedures called urodynamic testing to measure how your urinary system works.

These tests can give your doctor more information about your symptoms. Understanding what's wrong will help you and your doctor decide on an effective treatment plan. So if your doctor does refer you to a specialist, be sure to make your appointment.
